One unique aspect of PQ’s silicate and magnesium sulfate product lines is the way in which their two chemistries interact to complement each other. Soluble silica is highly reactive toward free magnesium. When combined, the two produce a high surface area colloidal material that is an excellent adsorbent or filler.
When used together in pulp bleaching applications, a higher final brightness can be achieved because colloidal magnesium silicate does a better job of controlling transition metal ions than either silicate or magnesium hydroxide alone. Scale control is an important secondary benefit. The addition of magnesium silicate to bleaching liquors reduces or eliminates the formation of calcium silicate scale, which can damage equipment and reduce process capabilities.
Silicates and magnesium are often used together in water treatment processes. Magnesium reacts with soluble silica in water to precipitate it out of solution, often carrying along other soluble metals that should be removed. The treatment of boiler and mine waters is a good example of this application.
Silicates and magnesium sulfate also complement each other when used in agricultural applications. Both magnesium and silica are important plant nutrients. When applied together, they promote growth and improve disease resistance. Recent research also suggests that these products may work in a similar fashion in livestock and animal feed.
