How it works: Silicates are used in
water based mud systems to stabilize water sensitive shales. Drilling muds must
provide the following functions:
Cooling the drilling bit
Lubricating the drilling bit and the drill string
Cleaning the bit and carrying the rock cuttings to the surface
Controlling downhole pressure
Stabilizing the shale
Among their advantages, silicate muds:
Prevent bit balling
Prevent differential sticking
Prevent loss of circulation during drilling
Inhibit corrosion
Are relatively inexpensive
