OUR APPROACH TO HSES

We believe that world class HSES performance depends on the implementation of well-defined processes by well-trained employees and contractors. These processes start with our HSES Mission & Guiding Principles and ZERO HARM Philosophy, which define our values.

ZERO HARM is our goal built from the belief that all injuries and incidents are preventable.

Zero tolerance means that we will act if we see someone behaving unsafely or in a manner likely to cause an environmental problem.

Everyone will be trained so that they can effectively contribute to HSES improvement and understand the importance of their own behavior.

Risk assessment is an essential precursor to effective risk control.

Observations are a key part of our HSES improvement strategy.

Hardware will be properly designed, installed, used and maintained.

Audits will identify deficiencies and drive continuous improvement.

Recognition of good performance is important to create a positive culture.

Management leadership will be visible and consistent.

PQ’s goal is to operate safe and secure workplaces consistent with our ZERO HARM philosophy. We also set annual targets and regularly review HSES performance to determine continuous improvement strategies and to ensure that appropriate standards, practices, resources and training are maintained.

Three charts contain current information about PQ’s overall health and safety performance:
 PQ’s 2008 year-to-date OSHA recordable incident performance compared to its 2008 target;
 2008 year-to-date recordable incident performance of the Potters Industries and PQ Chemicals business by region; and
 PQ’s 2008 environmental incident performance for spill/release events required to be reported to external Agencies.
